Drinks with a lot of sugar will rot your teeth, right? That’s the conventional wisdom.

But what about the acid? It’s not something we think much about, especially when it comes to the river of energy drinks we — and young people in particular — are consuming.

30 to 50% of teens are estimated to be gulping down energy drinks

Energy drinks are highly acidic. Not only does the acid erode your tooth enamel but it also changes the pH levels in your mouth making it much more hospitable to bacteria. Bacteria cause gum disease and tooth decay.
